Why Are States Opposed to Electronic Cigs?

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Intuit (the creators of Quickbooks) recently created this infographic to show exactly how much money is being made from the sales of tobacco in each state.

Do you think it’s a coincidence that the states making the most money are the ones most aggressively pursuing anti electronic cigarette legislation? I sure don’t!

As electronic cigarettes become more popular, causing people to buy fewer of the traditional analog death sticks, the states will lose more and more money.

By passing laws against electric cigarettes, they can continue to protect their blood money.

New York Bans E-cigs

Monday, May 10th, 2010

As incredible it may seem, I actually sat through this entire video, and the only thing worse than the poor quality of the video itself, was the poor quality of the legislature in New York.

Let me get this straight, NOT ONE single legislator voted against this?

Some of them didn’t even know what an electric cigarette was, and none of them seemed to have any interest in whether what this woman was saying is true or not.

Sanity in Virginia (sort of)

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Just like California senate bill 400,  it looks like the anti-electric smoking lobby has been stopped for now in Virginia, not because a bill was being passed to ban them, but because over zealous anti-smoking lunatics tried to argue that electric cigarettes actually violated the non-smoking ban.

According to the Washington Post,  Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, has ruled that electric cigarettes do *not* violate the state’s smoking ban. Hooray!

Unfortunately, it was necessary for him to “rule” because the opinion was requested by Del. Chris Peace. He said that a constituent called him after she was told by the Virginia Department of Health that the devices do violate the state’s smoking ban.

FDA Loses and We Win

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Back in July, Oregon became the first state to sort of  “ban” the sale of electronic cigarettes, after this report was released.

Within days of that report, the state government here in Oregon acted quickly and heroically ;) to protect us,  pulling a couple of products off the shelf.

The local TV and radio news was busy for two days talking about Oregon’s supposed “banning” of electric cigarettes.

This turned out to not be  true, and I spoke to the Oregon DOJ about their Ecig decision, but the damage was done, and the industry took a black eye here in Oregon.

Ca. Senate Bill 400 – Terminated

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

arnoldIn a last minute stay of execution,  Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has vetoed California Senate Bill 400, which among other things, would have made the sale of ALL electronic cigarettes in California illegal to anyone.

In a message regarding the veto to members of the California State Senate he sent the following:

To the Members of the California State Senate:
I am returning Senate Bill 400 without my signature.

While I support restricting access of electronic cigarettes to children under the age of 18, I cannot sign a measure that also declares them a federally regulated drug when the matter is currently being decided through pending litigation.

Oregon Did Not Ban Ecigs

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Oregon has not banned the sale of electronic cigarettes, a.k.a smokeless cigarettes!

At least, that’s my position, and I’m making efforts to clarify that officially.

Based on news stories that appeared on our local television news, and subsequent reprints of an AP article and other news sources all over the web, people are mis-reporting the information.

What does it say?
The way I read the article, only two stores were affected in the entire state, and only one brand of the product.

What the FDA REALLY Said

Saturday, July 25th, 2009

Listen for yourself to the audio file of the FDA’s press conference right here.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

We found this file while poking around on the FDA site, and in the beginning, they say it’s coming down in a few days… huh? Isn’t it a matter of public record? Well it is now…

If you’ve been reading any of the biased and corrupt media reporting, they make it sound like the FDA has determined that electric cigarettes are just as harmful as regular cigarettes.

Ecig Report Released by FDA

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

Yesterday was not a good day for the electric cigarette industry in the United States, as the news media seems to be incorrectly reporting that the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has officially declared the electric cigarette harmful!

Reading the news stories, like this one at CNN offer us very little actual “news” or information about what’s actually in this FDA report, and they give no way to find out any more information. It’s an editorial, disguised as news!

They say claim this, for example -
The FDA is concerned about the safety of these products and how they are marketed to the public,” said Dr. Margaret A. Hamburg, commissioner of the FDA.

Electric Cigarettes Becoming Illegal?

Saturday, June 13th, 2009

Theres some really disturbing news from the US government this week, that the FDA is actually going to be regulating nicotine as a drug.

The bill has passed the House, passed the Senate, and currently sits in Obama’s inbox in the Oval Office.

Theoretically, this could severely impact your ability to purchase one of these electric cigarettes as a US citizen. How ridiculous is that?

Here’s what NPR has to say, in an article written yesterday:

“It’s a bill that’s been more than 10 years in the making — supported by Republicans and Democrats, President Obama and, more surprisingly, by the nation’s largest tobacco company — Philip Morris.”
